Reinvent Brownies

Re-invent brownies by breaking them down with your hands and drizzle with whipped cream, chocolate syrup, and broken chocolate chips or sliced almonds. You can even try cocoa powder.

Incorporating Textured Patterns

Incorporating textured patterns into your decor is a safe and transitional way to add some jazz to your room. It's non-committal and inexpensive but an effective way to make a dramatic difference or a subtle change if thats's what you prefer. The possibilities are endless.

Milky Lavender Bath Treatment

Create a moisturizing and lovely scented bath treatments using milk powder and lavender flowers. I like to blend these inexpensive ingredients and pour them into a clear tea canister. They're a great gift idea during the cold season. I pack them with lavender sachets. Simply pour the treatment into the sachet to make clean up easier. A relaxing bath treatment isn't so much so when you're required to clean after yourself.

Milk

Find out how much your milk costs at your gas stations. Some people find the best value at the quick mart than they do at supermarkets. Powdered milk is generally cheaper than fresh milk, too. Powdered milk doesn't taste as good and takes a while to adapt to. Drink it when it's icy cold for the best flavor. If you really can't stand the flavor of powdered milk, consider adding it to soups and other cooked foods. I buy a large batch of powdered milk during the cold season and use it in my bath water for a relaxing experience.

Leftover Soup

If you're flat broke, here's a meal idea. Set aside your leftovers and store in the freezer. At the end of the week, throw everything into a pot (bits of meat, veggies, rice, beans, pasta, etc.) with water or chicken stock. Season it with spices, fresh herbs, and cook until heated through. Just be sure to not use this method with fish, which can stink up and ruin the entire dish. Don't expect this meal to be scrumptious. It's just a choice when you're strapped for cash.

Cinnamon Toast

Love the cinnamon flavor of French toast but pressed for time? Simply toast your bread, butter it, and sprinkle it with a shake of cinnamon and sugar. Make your own cinnamon and sugar mixture, and store it in a shaker that you can buy at the 99 cents store.

Catch and Release Mice and Rat Traps

For an environmentally-conscious choice, buy a catch and release trap. The pest will enter the baited trap and the door will close behind it. The trapped pest and the trap box can be moved to a new location and release the pest unharmed.

Glue Traps: A Type of Mice and Rat Trap

Glue traps are on cardboard or wooden surfaces with a gooey coating. Simply place a piece of cheese or another type of food to attract the pest on the sticky residue. When the pest goes to eat the food, the trap will set and the glue will keep the pest in place. To discard it, use heavy gloves.

Preventive Measures to Keep Mice and Rats Away

Mice and rats go where the food is. So close all packages of pasta, cereal, cookies, chips, and other edible delights. It's best to store them in airtight containers.

Mice and Rat Infestations

Rat poisons aren't recommended for personal use because of the possibility of a pet consuming the poison or the poisoned pest. If you don't have pets or children, this may not be a concern. But there are safer alternatives that aren't toxic such as preventive measures, glue traps, and catch and release traps.

Hidden Containers in Bathrooms

Keep a small plastic container under your bathroom sink, so you can transfer items you don't want any unexpected guests to see such as mustache bleach.

The Right Temperature to Keep Guests Comfortable

Set the room temperature between 68 to 70 degrees in Fahrenheit, and show your guests where the thermostat is. So they can adjust the temperature to their liking.

Guest Accommodations: Welcoming Candles

Some people like to leave vanilla-scented candles to create a welcoming environment for house guests in their bedroom. I caution against this suggestion. What if your guest forgets to blow out the candle and a simple overnight stay results in a burnt down home?

Guest Accommodations: Duplicate House Keys

Leave a duplicate copy of your house keys on the dresser or in another clearly visible, designated area.

Guest Accommodations: Create an Amenities Basket

Create an amenities basket filled with Tylenol or another type of medication, sample sizes of toothbrush, toothpaste, and shampoo, lotion (unscented baby lotion is the gentlest and safest choice), bottled water, and maybe some chocolate or something else light to munch on. If your guests aren't familiar with your area, maybe include a local map, too.

Guest Accommodation: Location, Location, Location

Don't place the bed lengthwise against the wall. This will require couples to have to climb over each other to get in and out of bed. That wouldn't be a very convenient or comfortable stay. I like the idea of surrounding a bed with two nightstands. On it, place an alarm clock and night light. So your guests can see what time it is and see where they're going. A night light can also be used for some light nighttime reading.

How to Get Rid of Squeaky Bed Frames

Fix a squeaky metal bed frame by lubricating it with WD-40 on places where metal hits metal. For wooden frames, sprinkle baby powder into the joints and work it into cracks with a toothbrush.

Reshaping Knee High Boots

Reshape your knee high boots by rolling up an old magazine. Stick it inside lengthwise until it achieves the round shape you're looking for.

Shred Important Documents

To protect yourself from identity theft, invest in a diamond-cutting paper shredder. Diamond shreds are most difficult to piece back together. Shred all important documents before discarding.

Remove Yourself From Solicitation Calls

Remove yourself from solicitation calls by adding yourself to a do-not-call list by going to www.dmaconsumers.org and list your phone number.

Poultry's Shelf Life

Packaged poultry should be refrigerated and used within two days or stored in the freezer.

Latex or Plastic Gloves While Working with Raw Meat

If you work with a lot of raw meat and poultry with rubbing on marinades, consider using latex or plastic gloves, and remove them when it's time to wash your hands and dishes. This way you don't contaminate the sink handle(s) with the bacteria or raw meat and poultry every time you go to wash your hands. It may seem pricey at first to make unnecessary purchases, but it'll make cleaning easier. And isn't a healthy environment worth the extra cost? After all, do you really disinfect your sink every time you handle raw meat and poultry? If not, this is a measure worth taking.

E. Coli Culprits

Hamburger meat is more likely to have E. coli than steaks. So every time you're handling hamburger meat, use a thermometer on the thickest part of the patty. Cook until it reads 160 degrees F. For medium rare steaks, your thermometer should read 145 to 150 degrees F. For medium steaks, 155 to 160 degrees F. For medium-well, 165 degrees F. For well done, it should be 170 to 180 degrees F.

The Best Bowls

Plastic mixing bowls are easiest to lift and use. They're also inexpensive and breaks down easily. While stainless steel mixing bowls intensify emulsifying action, making it ideal for mixing ingredients, leftover foods shouldn't be stored in this material. The best large bowls are ceramic ones or oven-proof glassware that can double as serving dishes and mixing bowls.

Save on Dry Cleaning

Unless your clothes specifically is labeled DRY CLEAN ONLY, you can hand wash them if it instructs just DRY CLEAN by filling your sink or tub with cool water and a capful of Woolite. Let it soak and thoroughly rinse with warm water. Hang dry tops and lay sweaters on a meshed drying surface.

Extra Yolks

If a recipe only calls for egg whites, don't throw out the unused yolk. Put it in a bowl with a little water over it and cover it with plastic. Keep it in the refrigerator until you use it, which should be within three days.

Freezer Safe Plastic Zip-ups

Freezer safe plastic zip-ups can be initially pricier than the basic variety, but they freeze food better and are made of better quality. You can also re-use them several times with thorough washings. Just don't reuse the ziplocks that have stored poultry or meat.

An At-Home Buffet Concept

At buffets, food selections lack cohesiveness are offered at a bargain. You can re-create that concept at home by turning your accumulated leftovers earlier in the week into an at-home buffet meal.

Air-Popped Popcorn

Popcorn is a nutritious, light, and extraordinarily cheap snack choice. You can also customize it to your flavor preference. Try it with a sprinkle of paprika or lemon pepper, whatever you'd like.

Crudites

Crudites is the French term for an assortment of raw, cut-up vegetables that can be eaten with a dip. Create your own palette of crudites with fresh broccolis, carrots, celery, and radishes, all very affordable choices. Store them in water to keep them fresh and crispy. You can dip them in Ranch dressing, hummus, onion dip, or whatever you'd like.

Pudding or Gelatin

Make a large batch of pudding or gelatin that'll last a week, and store it in the refrigerator. You can eat it with cake or fresh fruit.

Cake or Brownies

Buy boxes of cake or brownie mixes when they're on sale. Make huge batches and store remaining amount in the freezer in single portions. Thaw only what you want to eat in the refrigerator. Thrown into a lunch box, it'll keep your food fresh and cool as it thaws. You can alter the flavor by adding ice cream or strawberry syrup. (You can make strawberry syrup with fresh fruit, water, and sugar, affordable ingredients).

An Assortment of Cheese and Fruits or Vegetables

An updated twist to eating already cut-up fruit is to combine it with a variety of cheeses. It's a great way to meet your dietary requirements of dairy and fiber, too. Brie cheese goes well with apples so does cream cheese. You can also try feta or goat cheese with tomatoes.

Make Your Own Ice Pack

The next time BevMo has a buy 1 bottle and get the second bottle for $1 special, take advantage of the deal...unless you're an alcoholic. I love to cook with white wine, so I stock up when I can. White wine can go bad easily in the fridge but will last much longer in the freezer. Once you open a bottle and you don't plan on using it right away, transfer the contents into ziploc baggies. Because of the alcoholic content, the wine won't completely freeze. It'll actually be slushy in texture, which means that this ice pack will conform to the located injury. Reserve a specific bag just for icing a wound. Do not, I repeat, do not use the wine you applied over a wound in a recipe. It's already been contaminated, which is why I recommend designating a specific bag for the sole purpose of icing a wound.

Cultural Themes

An educational and fun theme that's also kid-friendly is designating a cultural theme in a specific room or wall. When my friend bought a three-bedroom house, he selected an African, Hispanic, and Asian theme for every room. You can even create a menu based on a cultural theme. Maybe invite friends over once a month, and everyone brings a dish from the selected region. You can do this once a month or once a week according to your preference.

Diversify Your Pantry Items

Pantry items should be staples that can easily be incorporated into basic recipes. Buy pantry staples that come in cans and have to be frozen. This way if there's a blackout, you can access food from your cupboard, rather than your freezer. However, don't limit your pantry staples to canned products. Freezers work more efficiently when it's completely full, so you save money on your electric bill, too. Plus, if you over clutter your cupboards with canned products, it can create a safety hazard.

Wear Light Clothes

Wear clothes that are light in weight and light in color. This way any sweat can easily evaporate and heat won't get trapped in dark colors.

Microfiber Cloths

Replace your disposable one-time use paper towels with microfiber cloths. They're made of superior quality and can hold five to seven times its weight in water. They're also re-usable and versatile. You can use it to clean the dishes, dry the dishes, clean the counter, windows, mirrors, etc.

Boost Your Eyelash Curler's Performance

Rather than spending money on a heated eyelash curler, simply heat your manual eyelash curler with your hair dryer. Then use as you ordinarily do. The heat will curl your lashes more effectively than by gently pressing at it. It works more like a curling iron.

Transform Your Lipstick into Lip Gloss

Transform your lipstick into a lip gloss by melting your lipstick and a little Vaseline into a tiny jar. Mix it together and enjoy.

Prevent Your Lipstick From Bleeding

Prevent your lipstick from bleeding by keeping them well-moisturized. Lipstick bleeds when your lips are dry. Slather on a coat of Vaseline before going to bed. At night is when your body rejuvenates itself. Your body will absorb the moisture best during this time. Apply a thick coat of Vaseline for five minutes before applying your lipstick. Gently remove the Vaseline beforehand. Alternatively if you shower in the morning, slather on a thick coat of Vaseline before you get in. The humidity from the water and heat will moisturize your lips a lot more effectively. Then, line your entire lips with a translucent lip liner. I like Paula's Choice. This acts as a lip fixative.

Soften a lipstick shade with Vaseline

Soften the intensity of a striking lipstick shade with Vaseline.

Christmas Tree Out of the Option

If, for whatever reason, a Christmas tree is out of the question, either because you can't afford one or you don't have the space for it, you can still create a Holiday atmosphere. You can get a wreath and/or hang Christmas lights around the wall. But if you can't afford one, try buying a box of Christmas ornaments from the 99 cents store and place them around your home. You can also buy stocking stuffers and a gingerbread house.

A week's worth of cut up fruit

The longer fruit has been cut up, the less nutritious it is. But if you don't have any fruits, that's even less nutritious. Make the most out of what you have, what you can do, or what you're willing to do. Cut up a week's worth of selected fruit and have it daily. It's already cleaned, cut, and ready to eat. You won't have to prepare another batch for a week.

A Filipino-style Breakfast

Filipinos have a bowl of rice with salted duck eggs and sliced tomatoes. It is an acquired taste. But if you can enjoy it, it's an inexpensive and filling treat. The duck eggs have a long shelf life, too.

An Instant Breakfast

If making oatmeal or cutting up fresh fruit doesn't appeal to you, but you want something more lively than ordinary cereal, consider having a bowl of granola with dried fruits and yogurt or milk. You can also add honey if it suits your taste.

More Than One Type of Belt

Belts don't have to be the standard leather kind. If securing your pants isn't an issue, you can lace your jeans with a black silk scarf and use that as a stylish and wispy belt. I love the look of a black top and blue jeans with a black scarf belt or a deep eggplant top with black pants and a purple scarf used as a belt.

Storing Frozen Produce More Efficiently

You can transfer corn or peas into plastic water bottles before storing them in the freezer. They take up less space than the frozen bags they come packed in, an ideal solution for freezer storage efficiency. It's also a great way to re-use your bottles.

Ziploc Baggies

While storing your items in ziplock baggies aren't the most visually-aesthetic, they're inexpensive, versatile, and work well. There are so many different sizes available. You can maneuver them into virtually any space you have available and the translucent color allows you to see what's inside.

Moving Tip: Get the Right Boxes

Use small boxes for heavier items and larger boxes for lighter items. Smaller boxes are sturdier and less likely to break than large boxes heavily weighed down. Large boxes can hold clothes, bedding collections, etc. Books should be in smaller boxes. Before buying new boxes from a moving store, try to get free boxes from nearby stores (Target, Walgreens, Rite Aid, Wal-Mart, K-Mart, Office Max, Office Depot, Ralph's, VONS'Safeway, etc.) Call the stores and find out when they get new shipments in. Ask if someone can set aside some boxes for you to pick up later. Boxes may be already broken down and will probably be the larger-sized ones. But that's okay because if you're only packing light items, they can afford to be a little worn down. It may still be inevitable. You may need to buy some boxes, but think of how much money you saved from getting free ones.

Moving Tip: Using Towels as Buffers

When you're packing breakable or rough-surfaced items such as dishes and cookware, wrap them in towels to protect them. It's cheaper than buying bubble wrap. Plus if the towels are clean and the dishes and cookware are, which they should be, you can skip the washing process as you unpack them.

Toothpick in Lemon for Just a Squeeze

If you only want a small squeeze of lemon juice, prick the lemon with a toothpick, rather than cut the whole lemon in half. It saves money, time, and is more economical.

Filipino-style Apples

If you're looking for a new way to enjoy a classic snack such as apples, consider eating it Filipino style. It's a little unconventional for many of us, and it is an acquired taste, but I think it's worth the experience. Slice apples into wedges and drizzle with white distilled vinegar and a little salt. It's a pungent and acidic sharp flavor that's unique. It has a bite to it, and I really like it.

Replace Your Sponges Regularly, Affordably

How often sponges should be replaced vary largely from every two weeks, once a month, to a every few months. I prefer to replace mine every month, considering the contaminant exposure my sponges face: raw poultry and meat juices leftover on cutting boards, fats and greases from various foods, the damp and moist environment sponges live in, etc. Experts claim that sponges can be as dirty as raw poultry! To make replacements more affordable, I buy my sponges at the 99 cents store. I get 6 sponges for 99 cents! They're surprisingly durable and don't scratch my cookware surfaces.

Close to Flawless Skin in Cold Weather

If your skin is only slightly uneven in complexion and you live in a cold environment, consider using tinted moisturizer. It's inexpensive, applies on easily, requires less maintenance, and doubles as a moisturizer and skin protectant. There's no point in following a meticulous routine of applying foundation and concealer if you don't need it. You could be unnecessarily clogging your pores with multiple products. While some people recommend using tinted moisturizer in hot weather because of the SPF 15 benefit, I advise against it. The liquidy-creamy consistency can melt in the heat and create a darkly discolored mask. Ugh!

Makeup on a Budget

If you're on a budget, prioritize money for high-end foundation and concealer. Flawless skin can only be achieved with superior ingredients that glide on smoothly. Eye shadows, eye liners, mascaras, lip liners, lipsticks, and lip glosses are similar in formulation. In fact, many department store brands also own drugstore brands, too.

Moving Tip: Three-Day Suitcase

Pack a suitcase with belongings you know you'll need for the next three days (personal care products, hygiene-related, clothing, pajamas, etc). Be sure to include cleaning products because you'll inevitably come across a stain you have to disinfect before moving in your other furnishings.

Moving Tip: Change of Address Forms

Fill out change of address forms, found in post offices or online, six to eight weeks before your move. This way by the time you move into your new residence, all your mail would be forwarded already. And you don't have to worry about any complications regarding credit card statements, insurance forms, or other important documents.

Mirror Illusion

To create the illusion of more space than there actually is, strategically place a mirror two or three feet above eye level and try to reflect it off of a light fixture or something else that reflects light to bounce off of. (I don't recommend a window, though, necessarily). By tilting a mirror out from the bottom a few inches will create a thinning effect.

How to Clean Candle Wax

For hard surfaces, let the wax cool and dry off completely. It's much easier to tackle candle wax that's been hardened. Scrape off the wax with a credit card. Or better yet, stick to soy candles. The wax from soy candles clean off effortlessly.

Long Burning Candles

By transferring your taper candles in the freezer for a few hours before use, it'll burn for twice as long.

Entertaining Food Must-Haves

To accommodate unexpected house guests, here are some basic staples that you should have on hand.

1. Carr's Table Water Crackers

Go for the unsalted ones. I've learned that a lot of my Canadian friends have a low salt intolerance. It's always better to go more subtle for something like this. These crackers are simple and elegant.

2. Tapenade or Marinated Artichokes

I'm a huge fan of marinated artichokes, but not everyone is a fan. I like have three different times of tapenades on hand for guests to select from.

3. Garlic Brie or Stuffed Olives

I'll serve anything garlic, but some people shy away from anything that can have an offensive odor. Lemon marinated olives is a good alternative.

4. Nuts

I've found that not many of my friends have very sophisticated taste. So having something as simple and universally friendly as nuts are a favorable addition. I would stay away from the sugared ones which are sticky and can flake. A simple roasted variety with pecans, almonds, and cashews are great. Stay away from walnuts because they go rancid quickly and can ruin the entire batch of assortment. Since peanut allergies are common, I would steer away from that, as well.

5. Bread and Cheese Sticks

Bread sticks are a little plain, and I don't like to serve bread sticks and crackers. I find it a little redundant, but it's still good to have on hand. And yummy with creamy tomato soup in your flannel pajamas. I prefer cheese sticks because they have more flavor. But being Asian, I know a lot of people who are lactose intolerant. That's also something to consider.

6. Bruschetta

These Italian treats go deliciously with a simple assembly of yogurt parfait (yogurt and berries or other fruits). You can also serve it with ice cream, if you'd like. They're great for brunch or late night visits.

7. Box of Chocolates

Delectable treats that come in a beautiful package are a great treat worth enjoying. Serve it with warm almond milk.

8. Champagne

It's not a bad idea to have champagne around. It'll keep your guests from complaining about not eating. Depending on the time of year, you can add cranberries for a festive look.

Easy Cookware Cleaning

While I'm washing my plates, bowls, cups, and flatware, I usually squirt a little dish detergent and fill the cookware with water. Transfer it to a heated stove, and bring it to a boil. It'll efficiently degrease the cookware surface and make clean up easy. This is recommended for cookware with a long handle. I had to learn the hard way that using this method for a Dutch oven wasn't the best idea because I have to wait until the pot cools down. For cookware without handles, I squirt dish detergent and fill it with very hot water. You can even pour boiled water from your teakettle, just as long as it doesn't heat the entire cookware.

How to Tell If Your Eggs are Fresh or Expired

Place the egg in a pan of cold water. If it sits on its side, the egg is still fresh. If, however, it tilts on an angle, it's past its prime by about three to four days. If the egg stands upright, it's approximately ten days old. If the egg floats to the top, it's really, really old.

Bedroom Colors

To promote a restful sleep environment, select relaxing colors such as soft blues, violets, and gentle greens. Stimulating colors such as yellow, oranges, and reds will have a disruptive effect on your well-being.

How to Stay Cool

In the dead of heat, strip down to a spaghetti strap top and short shorts. Pull your hair up. Replenish yourself regularly to cool your body temperature. Eat light foods, as digestion uses a lot of energy and burns your body up. Try using a Japanese sandalwood fan, which has a light and refreshing scent. Rather than turning on the AC, consider buying a small fan focused on one area. It'll more efficiently cool the place down. Stick to sandwiches, salads, fruits, and stay away from oven cooking.

3-in-1 Product: Baby Shampoo

This is every typical girl's best friend. It's shampoo, makeup brush cleaner, and lingerie washing detergent. Use it as a clarifying shampoo because it's not pumped with massive chemicals, which is why it's gentle enough to clean your makeup brushes and delicates.

Peeling a Ginger

I was shocked to hear and see a spoon being used to peel the skin of ginger. The first time I tried it, it was a miserable failure. But the second time, I was able to use it with ease. Try it. If it works well for you, your knives won't dull. And if you're lazy like me, you won't waste as much ginger by cutting chunks off along with the skin. Use it as though you're scooping the ginger out and bring the spoon towards you. It's surprisingly effortless. Plus, it's a great and safe way to involve children in the kitchen without any risks.

Baking Soda Expiration Date

I'm skeptical to trust shelf life guidelines, as they can be outrageously inconsistent and don't account for various factors. The general rule is that baking soda lasts for six months. If you question its freshness or it's been more than six months, you can assess its freshness by adding some vinegar to it. If the baking soda bubbles, it's still good. If it doesn't, it's past its prime. Throw it away.

Fusion Cuisine

If you can't make up your mind about what to make, consider a fusion cuisine. Rather than confining a recipe to something cohesive, try something out of the ordinary. It widens your menu selection and allows you to eat a variety of foods in one sit down without seeming cluttered and disorderly because the eclectic menu serves the right purpose and function.

Raspberries and Ricotta Cheese

For a healthy and sinfully delicious treat, indulge in a handful of fresh raspberries and a dollop of ricotta cheese sprinkled with cocoa powder.

Relaxing Colors

When you decorate your bedroom, use relaxing colors such as greens, blues, and purples. Colors such as yellows, reds, and oranges release stimulating vibrations that keep your body awake. Relaxing colors will soothe and put you in a relaxed state, promoting restful sleep.

Buy Buckets

I know it sounds like an odd suggestion, but you never know when they'll be helpful, and they're so versatile. You can use it when you mop. You can fill them up with water if you live in an apartment complex and are told that water will be shut off for a while. After you use the bathroom, fill the toilet with water to force a flush. It's great for soaking stains and handwashing lingerie. (I'm unable to wash in my bathtub because I have a bad back). The best time ever to have a bucket is when you're feeling sick or you're throwing a party. If you're sick, you should be in bed resting. But a sick person shouldn't clean vomited sheets. So a simple solution is a bucket. And we all know those fake people who think they can handle their liquor and after two beers are ready throw up their lungs. I say trust no one, and have a bucket ready.

Budget-Friendly Wedding Dresses

If your weight has a tendency to fluctuate or you want to save money on alterations, consider buying a dress with a lace-up corset in the back. It'll offer some added comfort and versatility, while providing a perfect fit.

Monday, April 7, 2008

Cloth Napkins

Consider switching to using cloth napkins. They're not reserved for fancy restaurants anymore. In fact, they're economical and environmentally-conscious. Think about the money you'd be saving. If you bleach your whites, consider buying white cloth napkins or else buy dark colored choices and wash them weekly with your regular laundering.

Wine Bottle as a Rolling Pin

If you can't rationalize buying a rolling pin, consider substituting a wine bottle as one.

No Tweezers for Insect Bites & Stings

You should never use tweezers to remove a stinger because applying pressure on the stinger can release more venom. Instead remove the stinger with scrapping your skin with a fingernail or a credit card.

Bring Your Own Supplies to the Hospital

Avoid steep hospital charges for vitamins, aspirin, lotion, telephone services, etc. by bringing your own. We can't always anticipate when we'll visit a hospital, so I highly recommend creating your own overnight stay bag with necessary supplies (shampoo, body wash, toothbrush, toothpaste, vitamins, eyeglasses or contacts, tampons, spare clothes for when you leave the hospital, entertaining activities, etc.) At the very least, create a list of items you would want to have at the hospital and place it in a location that's accessible to others. Have someone you trust gather items from your list and bring it to the hospital.

Monitor Hospital Activities

Hospitals are notorious for overcharging and even including duplicating additional expenses that patients aren't responsible for in a confusing format, anticipating that most patients will unquestioningly pay the bills. To prevent yourself from being a victim, create a daily inventory of all of your activities: administered medications, procedures, tests, services, food, etc. Compare your inventory to the hospital bill. Discuss any discrepancies with the billing office immediately. Having a reference will expedite any remedial alterations.

Experiment with Marinades

A great way to use up condiments is to create your own marinades. Seemingly ordinary sources can be surprisingly tasty: curry sauce, fish sauce, furikake (Japanese rice seasoning), orange juice, soy sauce (light, dark, tamari), vinegars (red and white balsamic, red wine, rice vinegar, and white wine vinegars), wasabi, Worcestershire sauce, yogurt, etc.

Milky Chicken

Soak chicken breasts in buttermilk, milk, or yogurt for three to four hours before cooking. The milk bath will provide a milky flavor but will also improve the quality of the texture, as well.

Use Your Space Resourcefully

For extra storage up, consider the ceiling. You can hang pot racks, wire baskets, and string bags to hold cookware, utensils, and produce that doesn't require refrigeration such as onions and potatoes.

Keep Your Cookbook Stain Free

Open the book to the page you need, and then cover it with a plastic bag or plastic wrap. This will preserve the quality of your cookbook and keep it sanitary.

Telephone Protectors

Keep an empty plastic bag by the phone in the kitchen. That way if you receive a phone call while you're preparing food, you can simply slip your hand in the bag and then pick up the phone to keep it clean.

Berry Dessert

In a beautiful glass or bowl, add a dollop or two of custard, top with fresh berries (blackberries, blueberries, strawberries), and sprinkle confectioner's sugar on top. It's delicious, simple, and a sweet treat. I also think it's a good way to limit custard consumption especially if you share this decadent treat with others. This is a great brunch dessert.

Incorporate Mini-Exercises

Do you think that you have no time to exercise? Think again. Park your car further away from your destination. The additional walking will be good for you.

Strengthen Buttons

To keep your buttons in place for longer, dab the back of the bottom with clear nail polish.

Don't Pop Blisters

Unsightly blister burns should never be popped. As unattractive as they area, popping them will not expedite the healing process. In fact, it can prolong it. By puncturing the blister and opening the wound up, you make it susceptible to infections. Plus, you've now damaged your skin. So your body will have to regrow its skin, which will add to the healing time. Your body will, in its own time, drain the blister. Rinse the blister, apply an antibiotic ointment, and cover with a bandage.

Do Not Butter Burns!!!

An outdated, traditional and severely damaging remedy is to apply butter on burns. Butter will retain and raise the heat levels because the butter will start to melt and sizzle. That sizzle is full of heat. Heat that's sitting over your burned skin. Not a good idea. Instead, run cold water over the affected area. Do not, I repeat, do not use ice. Ice can cling to the skin, but it's also an extreme temperature. Going from burning hot to icy cold is a shock to the system. Your body only interprets burn, hot and freezer burns.

Moisturize a Burn

After you've cleansed and thoroughly dried the affected area, with gentle pressure, apply a light layer of moisturizer over the affected area. Burned skin is dry skin. It's important to replenish the moisture its loss to return to its natural state.

For an Eclectic Potluck

For a truly diverse selection of foods, designate everyone to a specific region. (Indian, Japanese, French, Mediterranean, etc.) It's always interesting to see what others arrive with.

Potluck Dinner Parties

A great way to save money and have an eclectic selection of foods is to invite your friends over for dinner and ask everyone to bring a dish. I suggest being organized and assigning everyone a type of dish to bring, so you aren't overwhelmed with four desserts or something like that. (I have an ungrateful friend who constantly bitches because he expects everyone to bring all main dishes, but potlucks are supposed to be freestyle. More importantly, not everyone has the amino acids to break down foods without other accompaniments. For example, some people need rice or vegetables combined with chicken in order for the body to properly digest it. You never know how other peoples' bodies work, so I highly suggest a variety of food. Plus, people are more likely to enjoy it. Four types of chicken for someone who doesn't enjoy chicken isn't very logical or nutritious).

Buffet: Always Have Something Available

When you're serving a buffet, it's best to have two dishes for each item on the menu (two main dishes, two side dishes, etc.) So if one dish gets consumed, there's something else available for others.

One-Utensil Dishes

If you have a buffet, serve one-utensil dishes. It's much easier for your guests to eat off of their laps if they don't have to worry about using a knife and fork to consume their meals. Casseroles, stews, salads, and vegetable accompaniments are ideal. You can also serve satay or other foods on skewers such as tomatoes and mozzarella with basil leaves in between, vegetable kabobs, etc for convenience, both for the guests and the host(ess). Foods served on skewers often taste great at room temperature, an added benefit for buffets.

Eat a Hearty Breakfast!

Studies have shown that people who eat breakfast are more alert and energetic, eat less throughout the day, can sustain healthier food choices (because the body isn't over-compensating from low blood sugar levels), and maintain a healthier weight.

A Light and Quick Breakfast

For a light and quick breakfast, make yourself a smoothie in the blender. Milk bases are always favorable, nutritious, and flavorful. For a thicker consistency, try using Kefir milk, which is like yogurt. I recommend getting the plain flavor and adding your flavor of choice with fresh fruit. Frozen blueberries or bananas give it a nice icy texture to it. You can also add strawberries if you'd like. For a healthier boost, you can also add some flaxseed.

Remedy Burned Bread Tops

If your bread burns, use a grater or a good serrated knife to remove the charred area. Then brush the exposed area with egg polk and return the loaf to the oven for two minutes or until brown.

Uses for Stale Bread

Don't throw out stale bread. There are plenty of ways to use them. Depending on the stage of staleness, toasting the bread can reduce the stale flavor. French toast actually works best with stale bread. You can also make your own Croutons and dried breadcrumbs for a chicken recipe. They also work well in creamy soups such as tomato or chowder. Just cubed them and let it soak up the liquids.

Clarify and Establish a Goal

While brainstorming shouldn't be restrictive, it should also be productive and ultimately achieve a goal or come to some sort of conclusion especially with group brainstormings. To prevent too many floaty ideas from dominating everyone's time, a clear goal should be established and acknowledged by everyone present. By understanding what goal(s) they're trying to achieve, their thoughts are more likely to focus and refine to relevant solutions.

Encourage Brainstorming

Sometimes we're overwhelmed by great ideas unpredictably, but that doesn't mean that you shouldn't designate time out of your day to focus on exclusive brainstorming. We need inspiration, but we also need to be in a state of mind that's receptive and open to ideas. We have to slow down and take the time to formulate our thoughts. Experts reveal that walking at least thirty minutes every day stimulates cognitive thoughts because it activates both the left and right brain hemispheres that aren't normally engaged when we're sitting still. So I highly recommend taking a walk. This walk is supposed to be freeing and calming, so walk at a steady speed. Always try to walk at the same pace and preferably the same time everyday. This way your body will learn that this is the time to stimulate thought. Then return home to a space designated to brainstorming with all of the necessary supplies, free of clutter.

Brainstorming Supplies

Create an environment that welcomes brainstorming by having the necessary supplies: notepads, pencils, erasers, highlighters, etc. in every room. I'm talking bedroom, bathroom (not pleasant but you never know when an inspiration thought will arise), kitchen, living room, dining area, office room, and even your purse. Always be prepared to be open to innovative ideas.

A Mentally Stimulating Environment

For group brainstorming sessions, select a relaxed environment that's quiet enough that thoughts can form but not uncomfortably silent. Neutral locations are favorable. Don't choose a spot where someone got dumped by a serious signature other. If it isn't too windy, too sunny, and no one isn't suffering from allergies, the outdoors can be a liberating and reinvigorating environment. The sun is a natural energizer. In fact, the color yellow increases mental stimulation. Have food and beverage sources nearby. It's also important to pick a location that's accessible to restrooms.

The Shelf Life for Bread

Fresh bread generally keeps for five to seven days, but the details depends on the weight. The lighter breads evaporate moisture faster, so it get stale quicker. You can prolong its shelf life by storing your bread in the refrigerator. It won't taste as fresh, but you can remedy that by toasting your bread or making French toast with it. For longer shelf life breads, rolls and bagels are preferable.

Recyle an Old Bookcase

Recycle an old bookcase that has weak shelves or one that you want to retire for a better bookcase into an under-the-bed storage unit. Obviously I'm referring to the bookcases with backings. Just add casters on the bottom. You already have built-in shelves and everything.

Breaking in Hiking Boots

It's important to break in your hiking boots before using them. They're stiff and painful just to walk on. Hiking in them can be a recrudesce nightmare. To prevent this experience from occurring, position your boots so only the toe area is on the ground and the back area of the boots are standing upwards. Place your foot on the back of your boots and use your body weight to bend the heel of the boot over the toe. Repeat this process on both sides multiple times until they feel comfortable. Be sure to walk around in them sufficiently before a hiking trip.

Book Swaps

If you have too many books you're no longer interested in, you can throw a book swap among your friends. You can offer a finger food menu or ask everyone to bring a dish and any books they're willing to swap. There are also book swaps available in many cities, as well. Check with your city or local library.

Go Easy on Your Blender

When making frozen beverages in a blender, substitute ice with one or more of the ingredients that's been frozen such as frozen bananas or blueberries. If ice is non-negotiable in your recipe, blend with liquid. The liquid will serve as a buffer. Using the blender as essentially an ice crusher will bend and dull the blades over time.

Layer Blankets for Added Warmth

If you're cold, two light blankets will keep you warmer than one heavy blanket because each layer increases your warmth by about 3%.

Find the Right Blanket

Blankets come in thermal or conventional styles. Thermals are made of cotton or synthetic materials, intended for cooler temperatures and have an open weave design. Conventional blankets are usually made of wool, wool blends, or synthetics and have a tighter weave for warmer comfort.

Growing Charts

Watch your child grow up by marking his growth on a designated wall as he gets older each year on his birthday. Photograph him at the current height each year and add them to your scrapbook.

Gifts of Lessons

Rather than giving a one-time gift, consider offering a gift that keeps on giving such as dance lessons, cooking classes, singing lessons, poetry class, etc. A lot of us have these interests but don't always justify paying for it ourselves, rationalizing that our money should be spent more wisely. It'd be a great treat for a friend.

Gift of Time

If you're handy around the house, you're artistic, or you think you possess something of possible value to others, consider offering the gift of time. I have a friend who's considered the handyman out of our friends, and I've gotten end tables, stools, chests, coffee tables, and seats. I have another friend who's an artist, and I love receiving her art pieces.

Movie Lovers

For movie lovers, consider creating a gift basket centered around that theme for birthday or Christmas presents.

Two or three favorite movies and I like adding a wild card (a movie you think s/he might like)
Gourmet Popcorn
A selection of concession stand candy (I recommend a combination of chewy, chocolately, sweet, and sour combination)
Soda
Maybe even something salty and crunchy like chips

Pick a Birthday Theme

Pick a theme. It creates a focal point. The menu, card invitations, and decorations can be centered and organized around it. Here are some ideas:

Baker (Cookie Theme)
Beauty Party
Bookworm
Food Lover (Pasta, Sushi, Hors 'd Ouevres, Lemons, Apples, Cheese, or Chocolate Theme)
Knitting
Jewelry Making
Movie Marathon
Scrapbooking

Baby Pictures

Here's a simple and adorable card invitation idea. Scan an image of baby pictures and using that as part of the birthday invitation.

Birth Certificate on Hand

Keep each family member's birth certificate in one designated area, preferably a security deposit box or some sort of box that requires a password to open. Consider using a fireproof box. If your home becomes dilapidated from a fire or over flooded, you'll need your documents more than ever.

Name Changes

If you change your name by court order, rather than marriage or divorce, update your birth certificate to reflect your current name. It'll make legal procedures a smoother transaction.

Baby Feet or Hand Images

Copies of imprints made after your baby's birth or replicating the images can be used for birth announcements, birthday card invitations, or scrapbook images.

Raspberry Sauce

Make fresh raspberry sauce by pouring raspberries into a blender and adding just enough sugar to thicken and sweeten it up. You can pour this over vanilla ice cream, plain cheesecake, or mix it into plain yogurt or cottage cheese.

Yogurt and Fresh Berries

For a healthy snack, go for plain yogurt and add some natural flavors with freshly picked raspberries or another type of berries.

Freeze Berries

Wash fresh berries, thoroughly dry them, lay flat on a parchment paper over a cookie sheet, and freeze them until the berries are hard. It'll take about an hour. Make sure that the berries aren't clumped together. Once the berries have hardened, you can transfer them into an airtight container. Once they've frozen, putting them in the same bag isn't a problem. But do this before you freeze them, and you have a beautiful chunk of fruited ice that won't be very usable. Frozen berries will last up to nine months. One more thing worth noting, don't sugar berries before freezing them. Leave that to the last minute. The sugar breaks down the fruit and can make them mushy.

The Best Way to Wash Berries

Chill berries before washing them, as cold berries are less likely to bruise or bleed. And don't wash them until the last minute. Berries last longer this way, as they have a high moisture content. The berries will soak up the water and rot quicker.

Flip the Berries

When you store the berries in your refrigerator, turn the basket upside or on its side to relieve pressure from the bottom of the berries. They're soft and lie on the same bottom for a prolonged period. This can significantly reduce mushed berries.

Elongate Your Torso

Give the illusion of a longer torso by wearing a belt slightly higher than normal, above your hips.

Hang Belts

Store belts on hooks hidden in your closet, behind your door, or any other discreet area of choice. It's preferable to laying them flat or rolling them up and risk creating an oddly indented shape. Key holders on sale or from the Dollar Tree store can do the trick.

Preserve the Color of Belt Buckets

Preserve the color of your belt buckets by applying a coat of clear polish nail. This will also prevent scratches.

Blend Your Blender Clean

Many modern blenders have a clean feature. But if you don't, add some warm water and dish detergent to your blender. Then blend it until the detergent suds. It makes cleaning much easier. Continue to do this until stuck on food and residue dissolves. Then wash the outside of the blender as you usually do and rinse the inside thoroughly.

Ornamental Visual Aid Speaks for Itself

Wrap Christmas lights around cardboard or another thick material. When you reach the end of the lights, just loop it inside one of the lined lights to keep it in place. Wrap a towel around this storage solution or place towels on top to serve as a buffer and stack remaining Christmas lights the same way.

Headboard Alternative

If you don't want a headboard, you can hang a decorative quilt or a large collage image instead.

Seating Area and Storage Unit

If you have limited closet space, consider investing in a bed trunk that can serve as a seating area and storage unit for bedding collection, clothes, towels, or whatever else requires storage.

Store Beans Beautifully

There are so many different shapes, colors, and texture of beans available (yellow split peas, green split peas, red kidney beans, pink kidney beans, adzuki beans, etc.) Store them in decorative containers and display them for their visual aesthetics and accessibility.

Color Code Your Towels

Designate specific colors for each family member for a cohesive appearance and ease of use. You can also incorporate this practice for guests. Select a bold color that's easy to remember and distinguish from residents.

Anti-slip Feature

Bathroom safety is so important especially considering how slimy the bathtub is. A bath mat's anti-slip feature is such a priority because of the potential danger. But the slime buildup underneath the mat and the tub's surface is so disgusting. A more sanitary but safe alternative are anti-slip stickers. It's also a good idea to sew some skids under your bath rug to create a little resistance. It'd be unfortunate to shower safely only to come out and fall on your bathroom floor because you're wet and your bath rug has no anti-slip features.

Decorative Baskets

Decorative baskets are a great storage solution for items that usually clutter such as a hair dryer, straightening iron, curling iron, and other hair appliances. Because the bathroom is a moist environment, I don't recommend wooden boxes or other materials that aren't resistant to moisture.

Prolong Your Bathing Suit

Rinse your bathing suit in cold water after swimming to remove any salt or chlorine residues. It's preferable to wash your bathing suit by hand, but if you'd rather use the washer, put it in the gentle cycle with a mild soap. Don't put it in the dryer, as the dryer will damage the elasticity. Of all things to have destroyed elasticity, a bathing suit should never be one of them. Dry them by placing them over a towel and rolling it up like a sushi. Then gently squeeze the towel. Don't twist or wring the suit around, which could also break down the elastic.

A Citrusy Bath Experience

If you have oily skin and some leftover citrus fruits, place them in your bath water. I like adding lemon, lime, and orange slices. The vibrant colors are so invigorating.

Roses That Keep on Giving

I love fresh flowers, but I can never rationalize buying myself some. They're unnecessary, and there are so many other things I need. But sometimes when they're on sale, and I'm feeling down, I make an exception. Make sure that they're organic and fresh. I justify my indulgence by getting the most use out of it by buying a bouquet of roses. I begin by keeping them in a beautiful vase and change them up from time to time. Sometimes I place a single rose petal in a tall vase in my bedroom. The remaining roses get cut down. I trim the stems, so I can place them in a round vase in the middle of my dining table. A collection of short rose petals are more practical and modern than a tall a bunch that obstructs vision in an overcrowded small vase. If there's not enough space or after I get tired of the centerpiece, I completely remove the stems, leaving only the beautiful rose still intact. I float them in a transparent bowl with water and tealight candles. The final use is in the bathtub. I toss loose rose petals in my bath for a fragrantly relaxing experience. The natural oils will your skin so soft. What a luxurious experience. The color of the roses sometimes depends on the sale price. But if I have a choice, it depends on my mood. I use pink to relax because it's a soothing color. For a romantic experience, I use red because it's a stimulating color. I don't use red roses in my bath before bedtime.

Gift Baskets: For Food Lovers

For a simple and affordable gift for food lovers, create a gift basket that contains homemade jam, bread, vinegar, marinated olives, beef jerky, etc. You can even narrow it down to a specific ingredient such as raspberries (raspberry jam, raspberry jellies, raspberry vinegar, dried raspberries, etc.)

To Ripen Bananas

To ripen bananas quickly, put them in a brown paper bag with an apple or two.

Bananas Do Not Ripen in the Refrigerator!!!

I'm so sick and tired of stopping guests from removing bananas out of my refrigerate because they're misinformed and believe that the bananas are ripening. Refrigerators are cold, and the cold helps preserve freshness. That's what the refrigerator is used for. Follow me so far? So if you want fresh bananas and slow down the ripening process, you should put them in the refrigerator. The outer skin will discolor and darken the way bananas ripen on the counter at a much faster rate, but the inside is unaffected. It's by far the best way to keep them fresh.

Make It Easier to Be Healthier

It may seem like a waste to buy prepackaged, precut fruits and vegetables, but if you find that your fresh produce goes ignored, it may not be so frivolous. Your health is top priority. If you don't have or make time to eat nutritiously, make it easier for you. I usually recommend this for vegetables, though, not fruits, as the fruits taste rather bland. Berries such as blackberries, blueberries, and strawberries can be eaten as is. Buying produce that can be consumed easily is the way to go. Baby tomatoes are much more accessible than Roma tomatoes or Heirloom tomatoes that require chopping.

Baking Soda: Sunburn Soother

Just like baking soda takes the heat out of a fire by extinguishing it, you can use baking soda to soothe burned skin. Draw a cool bath and fill it with a cup of baking soda.

Baking Soda: Natural Fire Repellant

Place a box of open baking soda near your kitchen stove, not only as a deodorizer, but also as a natural fire repellant. Just sprinkle baking soda over the fire accident to put it out quickly. Having a closed box or a box that doesn't have a wide opening is useless if the fire spreads by the time you have it opened.

Treat Bad Breath

1. Hydrate yourself with water! A dry mouth becomes a breeding ground for bacteria, responsible for bad breath.

2. Steer clear of minted sugars. The minty freshness is only a brief experience, but the sugar contributes to the production of bad breath, which is long lasting.

3. Munch on carrots and celery. **

4. Fresh herbs such as mint or parsley is also a great breath freshener.

5. Consider switching toothpaste. Some ingredients don't do an effective job treating bad breath. Experiment with other brands.

6. Chronic bad breath may be a symptom of an underlying medical problem. If bad breath is severe and home remedies are unsuccessful, visit your dentist. It may be periodontal disease.

Buy a Name Brand Scientific Calculator For Only $1!!!

99 Cents store or the Dollar Tree store offers an abundance of products we normally get at K Mart, Target, Walgreens, or Wal-Mart for no more than a dollar! Some of you may consider their products to be inferior, but that's not necessarily the case. I've found fresh produce (blueberries, raspberries, bananas, apples, garlic), known and loved candies such as chocolate (Baby Ruth, Hershey's, Kit Kat, Milk Way, Snickers, Twix) and other candies (Fun Dip, Mamba, Nerds, Pop Rocks, Sour Belts, Starburst, Sugar Daddy) to just name a few. Heintz and Hidden Valley are also common brands. I'm a die hard when it comes to the right ketchup or ranch dressing. But there are some ingredients where the brand doesn't matter much such as canned tomatoes, coconut flakes, seasoning salt, etc. that are also available. You can also find Oscar Meyer ham. Caution: I recommend staying away from products that don't offer an expiration date. This applies to any place, though. I still haven't convinced you? What about Colgate, Glade, Lysol, Sally Hansen, Totally Juicy, and Windex brand products? I know someone who found the Texas Instrument scientific calculator valued at around $50 for only a $1! For binder papers, folders, and stuff like that, you can go for the cheap stuff. It's all the same. It's definitely worth investigating. Go there. If it's not your thing, then go elsewhere. I like to stay away from their generic brands because I don't know if it'll work well or not, so I go for the tried and true versions. If you want to experiment with new products, don't go overboard. Spending $5 on five products you'll never use isn't money well spent. You're better off buying one product that you actually use.

Be Resourceful with Your Space: Off the Ground

If you have limited floor space, be resourceful. Modern twists offer innovative concepts by taking advantage of wall space. I think many of us ignore the advantages wall space can offer. It's far more abundant and usable if you think creatively. Rather than a CD/DVD rack or a bookshelf, consider wall shelves that can serve the same function. You can even mount a table onto the wall that can drop down when you need a seating area. This can serve as an eating or study area. Just invest in a laptop, which takes up less space. Storage cubes can also serve as decorative pieces and clothes or towel storage units. Instead of purchasing a small table for your knick knacks, you can invest in wall shelves.

Aquariums for Stress Reduction

Studies have found that the calming sights and sounds of an aquarium may lower blood pressure and reduce heart rate. But be sure to buy an aquarium that's easy to manage, so you don't become overwhelmed, defeating the whole process. For your first aquarium, freshwater fish is preferable. It's the inexpensive choice and much easier to maintain than marine fish. You can begin with a mix of non-aggressive tropical fish such as guppies, tetras, barbs, and small catfish.

Preventing Apple Oxidation

When apples are exposed, it starts to brown. That's called an oxidative process. To prevent this from happening, soak them in salted water overnight. When I was a child, my mother was the only one who packed apples that still looked appetizing. She would cut my apples the night before, leave them in the salt water overnight, and dry them before packing them up. It's a great way to store your kids' snacks and actually encourage them to eat it because it looks fresh!

Eat Less

Most of us are over-consuming, binge-eating, while managing to neglect healthy food consumptions. To eat less, begin by munching on a handful of almonds or another type of nuts. The natural oils in them tricks your stomach into feeling fuller. Then begin your meal with a soup. The liquid content fills up stomach space. For your main dish, serve yourself a smaller than usual portion in what I like to call trick plates. Spread your food out into a plate to give the appearance of more food than there actually is. Have a generous portion of vegetables with your food. Fiber has a very filling effect. And focus only on your food, if time permits. By propping yourself in front of the television, you're not paying attention to what you're consuming. If you can, eat with good company and eat at the same time everyday. If your body is expecting food at a certain time, it'll properly prepare itself. And chew food thoroughly. When you chew your food, your body produces saliva, which breaks down your food. By chewing it thoroughly in your mouth, your digestive system doesn't have to work as hard. And the food becomes accessible much quicker, rather than leaving residual fats in your body. By exercising regularly, too, your body uses the energy you get from food more efficiently. It'll really help reduce your excessive consumptions. Sleep more, too. When you're awake, you eat. The longer you're awake, the longer you eat. Your body ends up overcompensating for not getting a recuperative sleep. It's also important to eat breakfast. By having a big breakfast, you eat less throughout the day. And don't forget to snack. Snacks are supposed to hold you over until the next meal and regulate your appetite. Desperately avoiding food to lose weight is illogical especially snacking. By not snacking, you end up overeating.

NOTE: Although it makes sense that you would eat less if you're paying attention to your consumptions, but I used to be suspicious about the scientific data behind it. Is it a real physical result or is it psychologically influenced? After some investigation, I learned that studies reveal, when you focus on one of the five sensations at a time, we're more focused. That makes sense. Splitting your attention such as listening to someone and reading something online isn't as successful as doing one thing at a time. Studies also reveal that multitasking is strenuous on the brain.

Antiseptic Alternative

If you don't have wound cleaner, substitute mouthwash to disinfect an affected area.

How To Make Buttermilk

To make one cup of buttermilk, add one tablespoon of vinegar or lemon juice to one cup of regular milk. Let it sit at room temperature for 15 minutes. After that, it's ready for use. So, basically one tbsp of vinegar for every cup of milk. Make as many cups as necessary.

I love this recipe b/c I rarely use buttermilk. So whenever a recipe calls for it, I end up purchasing more than I use.
